How to Care for Your Mixed Media Artwork

Mixed media artwork is a treasure trove of textures, colors, and materials that come together to create a unique visual experience. Because these works often combine elements like paper, paint, fabric, and found objects, they require special care to keep them looking their best for years to come. Whether you’re an avid collector or you’ve recently purchased your first piece, here are some practical tips to protect and display your mixed media artwork.

1. Frame It Right

Framing mixed media art is essential for preserving its integrity. Look for frames with UV-protective glass to shield the work from harmful sunlight, which can cause fading over time. Use acid-free mats and backing materials to prevent discoloration and damage to paper or other delicate components. If your artwork includes dimensional elements, consider a shadowbox frame for added depth and protection.



2. Keep It Clean

Dust and dirt can dull the vibrancy of your mixed media piece. Use a soft, dry brush or microfiber cloth to gently remove dust. Avoid liquid cleaners, as they can damage materials like paper, fabric, or adhesives. For particularly delicate pieces, consider consulting a professional conservator.

5. Avoid Touching the Surface

Many mixed media artworks feature textured or fragile surfaces. Oils from your hands can transfer onto the materials, potentially causing stains or degradation. Handle your pieces by their frames or edges and wear gloves when necessary.

6. Invest in Storage

If you’re not currently displaying your mixed media pieces, store them carefully. Use acid-free tissue paper and sturdy storage boxes to protect them from dust, moisture, and bending. Avoid stacking pieces to prevent pressure damage.
